For my portfolio I chose the theme anatomy. I chose this theme because I am fascinated by the complex structures that make us up and also hope to study them in my future. In my pieces I wanted to recreate my own version of the brain and heart with exaggerated, continuous lines to show the complexity of the organs. The mixed media pieces further play on the idea of complexity with different textures and technique of paint. The map behind the brain is used to symbolize that your brain controls your actions and is your "map" guiding you.
For the brains and heart, I took paper and an x-acto knife to carve it out. There is only one line that makes up the brains and the inside of the heart. I wanted to leave the white brain on its own to display the overlapping lines and allow it to be a bit disorganized. During this project I learned different painting techniques I used to add to the mixed media pieces. Those pieces include paper, wall paper, maps, acrylic paint, water color and stamping ink. I incorporated the element of design, line, in the cut out brains and heart. Lines are also used with the wall paper in the background of the mixed media pieces. The principle of design, emphasis, is placed on the mixed media pieces with different colors apart from the backgrounds to bring out the main focus of the pieces.

For this project I chose the element line. I was inspired how when lines are layered they can create texture and depth in a work of art.
I did a book carving and cut out the shape of leaves on a branch. The lines that I cut on with an x-acto knife slowly began to build up to give the branch of leaves a 3D effect. I learned that it take time for your vision to come true when making some pieces. I was worried when I first started that it would not turn out as I planned, but slowly as the layers built up, the piece started looking better and better. For this project I used symbolism to tell the story. I was trying to show how your brain is you map, and guides you through your life as it helps you make decisions. I wanted to have a map as a background of the brain with it just showing through small lines in the brain. I've always been interested in how the brain works, and I love to learn about it, so I really enjoyed making this piece.I really like how the map ending up looking behind the brain, so along with a few measuring errors on my part, I ended but having the map show a lot more than I originally planned. I also wanted to use a different brain for the final project (the one that I cut the pieces out with an x-acto knife) but I accidentally ruined it when I attempted to glue it down:(. So I used the negetive space and put the individual pieces together like a puzzle, which I think adds to the brain overall because our brains are puzzles and we don't know much about how they really work. The other piece I made in this unit told the story of a sunrise to sunset, and then from the sunset to the sunrise. I used chalk pastels and pencils to make this piece, and I really love how it turned out. I thought it was really cool how you can turn it in any direction and you see something different. Part of this is because of the way I drew the mountains at the bottom so when you turn it in different directions, the mountains look like different objects and helps to tell different storiesThis is how I originally planned the piece to be, with the mountains reflecting each other to show the contrast between the times of day.
I was worried when we first started this unit because I could not draw really at all, much less draw realistic portraits. During this unit I learned a lot about proportions and value that help the portraits look a lot more life-like. I realized within the first day of this unit that eyes were really my biggest struggle. I still think they are something that I really need to work on, but learning the correct eye proportions helped me improve. The eyes on my final drawing I'm still not that pleased with, but I think I have improved from where I started. i am really proud of my nose-drawings skills though.... |
